Easter Weekend

It's Easter weekend, which means family gatherings, Easter egg hunts, chocolate bunnies, Spring flowers and so on.  What about your dog though?

As with any major holiday, when daily routines are different from an "ordinary" day, your dog can get lost in the mix.  Your dog is part of your family, so you should be able to include him/her and not have him/her locked in the bathroom or spare bedroom.

When you have guests over, it can be VERY easy for your dog to sneak out the front door!

Dehydration in dogs

As I sit in my office typing this blog, it's 85° in Bethlehem.  85° means you want to be outside and rightfully so.  That also means you want to take your furry friend with you!
DO NOT FORGET TO TAKE AMPLE AMOUNTS OF WATER FOR YOU BOTH!!!

I don't know about you, but I love orange Gatorade.  Gatorade is great to replace YOUR electrolytes, however, it can be toxic to dogs in large amounts.  Giving your dog a sip of Gatorade is not bad, however, giving Gatorade in excess amounts, to your dog, is toxic!

How long...

Someone asked me, this morning, for advice on their dog. I listened to the issue.  The dog was found on the side of the road and this person "rescued" it.  Well, it turns out, this particular dog is fine with some people but will growl, snarl and bite the head off the next person.  I, personally, have not met this dog but from what I'm told, it sounds fearful.  Naturally, after being dumped on the side of the road.  I asked if the dog was particular to men or women and the owner said no.

Spring has Sprung

Do you want to open windows and doors and let the sunshine in?  Do you have cabin fever?  Guess what...dogs get cabin fever, too!

As I type this blog, it's currently in the low 60's.  It's beautiful outdoors! I have windows opened, doors opened and curtains open enjoying the beautiful sunshine coming through the windows.

With these beautiful temps, means you can get outdoors more.  It means you can take your furry friend with you, too!  There are a LOT of dog friendly hiking trails (if that's what you're into), there's walking paths, biking trails and so on.

Frustration

We all get frustrated now and then, but what many don't realize is...so do our dogs.

Yes, dogs get frustrated too.  No, they can't come right out and tell you, you have to know how to read their body language and figure it out.

I had a client tell me this morning, she's frustrated her dog isn't getting the homework given.  She cried about it and that added insult to injury to the dog not wanting to comply.

I tell clients, all the time, if you are feeling frustrated, STOP the task at hand and come back to it later.

What motivates YOU/Dog?

What motivates you? Your job, your kids, your hobbies, your dog(s)?

Bigger question is...what motivates your DOG?

What motivates me...helping you and your family with your dogs. Whether I'm dog walking, while you're at work or on vacation or I'm coming to your house to help you better understand your dog's behavior.

I became a dog trainer because I have a love of teaching and I love dogs. That was 2011. It's 2017 now and I still love teaching and dogs but I also love the science behind training dogs.

Pink Eye in Dogs

Over the NYE holiday, I developed pink eye.  I couldn't see, out of my left eye, couldn't wear contacts and it hurt.  Did you know your DOG can get pink eye, too? They can!  It's such as contagious, as if you were to get it (that's why I couldn't work for a few days after the New Year).

There are seven causes of pink eye in dogs..

Bacterial
Viral
Immune medicated
Cancer
Secondary to disease of tissue surrounding the eye
Secondary to trauma or environmental causes

New Year

We are 17 days into the New Year.  That means all dogs, over the age of 3 months, need to be licensed.  That means if you haven't done so already, you need to get your dog a 2017 License.  The exception to this law is if your dog is microchipped.  If your dog is microchipped, you may get a LIFETIME license, which as it's name states, is good for the lifetime of your dog.

Here is the link to the Pennsylvania Dog License website:http://padoglicense.com/
You may order your dog's license online.

NATIONAL TRAIN YOUR DOG MONTH

January isn't just the start of the new year, but it's also the start of National Train Your Dog month.  However, there does not need to be an entire month devoted to training your dog.  Training is an on-going bond between you and our dog!  Don't just do so during a specific month!

Just like us, dogs never stop learning.  They are an amazing creature with feelings, thoughts and actions, just like us!

Can they talk, like we can, of course not, but they "talk" with their body language.

On the 4th Day of Christmas

On the 4th Day of Christmas, your dog trainer gave to you...

We all have friends/family coming into town and that means your furry family member can escape from the house very easily.  I had it happen
last night, not personally, but to a neighbor.  This is the 2nd time this particular dog has gotten loose.

When you have guests coming in, make sure your dog is no where near the door so there is no chance of getting loose.  IF (accidents do happen), your dog would happen to get loose, make sure ALL tags on.
